Helping Catholics engage the world in word and deed.
About this Speaker
I write faith-inspired fiction and poetry for a secular audience as my contribution to the New Evangelization; in the Catholic world, I develop media to help Catholics evangelize the world, with a focus on service and Catholic social teaching.
I graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1992 with a BA in journalism, and from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2001 with an MA in pastoral ministry. Early in my career, I worked for small-town newspapers and a local business magazine. in 1998, I joined the staff of Saint Mary's Press as a development editor of high school religion textbooks, a position I held for five years before leaving to raise my small children while my wife, Susan, taught theology at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.
In 2015, I partnered with my former boss at Saint Mary's Press to start a small, independent Catholic publishing house, Gracewatch Media. Over the next five years, we published dozens of books for the Catholic market, with an emphasis on Catholic family faith formation. I sold many of those titles to Our Sunday Visitor in 2019, and have since been working on my fiction writing and relaunching my publishing company with a focus on evangelization and social justice issues.
I am the author of almost two dozen books, mostly for the Catholic market, including Living Justice and Peace (Saint Mary’s Press), 77 Ways to Pray with Your Kids (Dynamic Catholic), and forthcoming from Our Sunday Visitor in 2022, If You Walked with Jesus.
I have five children with my wife, Susan, all of whom are in the running for future sainthood. Fun random facts:
Everyone looks up to me…they have to, because I stand 6'7". However, I never played basketball in school, except for a few months in seventh grade before I broke my arm in a skiing accident.
I do not drive because of poor vision, which gives me an excuse if I misremember your name (“Sorry, didn’t recognize you…bad eyes, you know.”)
I was a live-in volunteer at a Catholic Worker house for more than two years in my early twenties, have been deeply involved with the pro-life movement as well as gun-control advocacy…yeah, I’m that guy who doesn’t fit in a political box.
I read widely, and generally have several books in progress at once.
You can find me on Medium, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, SmartCatholics, and OSV Connect.
